The Punk Rock Family Tree
According to Brent Evans…
Grandfathers
The Kinks (1964 - “You Really Got Me”)
The Who (1965 - “I Can’t Explain” & “My Generation”)
The Sonics (1965 - “Psycho”)
The Velvet Underground (1968 - “White Light/White Heat”)
Fathers
The Stooges (1969 - “I Wanna Be Your Dog” & “1969″)
New York Dolls (1973 - “Personality Crisis” & “Looking for a Kiss”)
Sons (Punk Rock)
Ramones (April 23, 1976 - Ramones)
Sex Pistols (November 26, 1976 - “Anarchy in the UK”)
The Clash (March 18, 1977 - “White Riot”)
The Jam (April 29, 1977 - “In The City”)*
*I would argue that The Jam are Mod Revival. But since most people lump Mod Revival in with Punk and they are one of my favorite bands, I’ll list them here. Thanks goes out to The Revivalist for the reminder!

Nice,
Sure, The Jam were THE mod revival band, but The Who were THE original mod band, without The Who there would have been no Jam! The Jam took the original mod sound and layered punk all over it.

Those of us who aren’t so UK- or NY-centric would probably have a list more along these lines:
Great-Grandfathers: Elvis (early days), Gene Vincent, Jerry Lee Lewis, Eddie Cochrane, Johnny Cash.
Grandfathers: Skye Saxon and the Seeds, the Music Machine, the Count Five, Arthur Lee and Love. Other influences of the same generation: Arthur Brown (”Fire”), surf/instrumental bands such as the Ventures and Dick Dale.
Fathers: Bowie (like it or not), Iggy and the Stooges, the MC5…
